Harvest and cold

It's getting colder. We actually had frost this morning and I am guessing my sunflower heads are just about ready to be lopped off to get the seeds out of them. I initially grew them as an experiment to see how many seeds we could get to help supplement our chicken feed. I didn't get as many to grow as I would have liked but I still got a decent amount so I'll be saving some of the seeds to plant again next year and giving some to the chickens.

These are a couple of pictures. Aren't they just beautiful?

I have also been drying a LOT of onions and putting them in old peanut containers that my husband saved for me. It makes it so easy to just add a few here and there when you are cooking and they still taste great.

You can see the containers with the onions in this picture.

We grew a lot of our own spices this year and have dried them and put them in containers. I have found that drying them in a dehydrator doesn't work so well but we do have a big mesh drying rack that does the job (I will include pictures later).
I have also been saving literally every seed I can get my hands on then drying them (air dry not dehydrator) and sealing them in little Mylar bags. If you look to the left in the picture above there are some little square pouches in a container and it looks like the first one is apple seeds that I saved from our apples off of our own tree this year. The pouches at the very front center were saved from a bushel of peaches we got also.
The cool thing is that my friends have noticed this and have began giving me seeds as well.

I could probably go on and on but I don't want to make this post really long. I'll put up some more pictures in the next post.

Until next time.
