Leaving their pots

It's finally that time of year when the pumpkins start getting too big for their pots and need to go in the ground. Anyone who knows me knows that I just love pumpkins in any shape or form so I have a lot.

If you are noticing what looks like straw in with the dirt that's because it's full of chicken manure. We use hay to line the floor of the chicken coop and put it in the gardens when we change it out. It's a great nitrogen source for the pumpkin plants. You can see all nine of the plants here and the first row are Jack O Lanterns while the second and third row are New England Pie Pumpkins.

This below is the puny watermelon plant. I put out six of them yesterday and will just have to see how they grow. I've never been much good at growing watermelon but I'm not done trying.

This is my current mess but as you can see I am making progress. My new weed whacker (A pretty orange Husqvarna) gets here on Wednesday and it will take care of a lot of the grass around the tires where I plant my tomatoes.

These are my sources of Nitrogen, Potasium and Phosphate. Some plants like more of these things than others do and I didn't have to buy any fertilizer. I'll be using coffee grounds for the pumpkins too, they really like that.

And when I came out to my gardens this morning I discovered that all my Chickens were out of the coop. I would love to leave them out for the day but they are notorious for destroying my garden and I don't need them disappearing one by one to predators. This one hen refused to go back into the coop and while I am usually pretty successful at catching chickens or persuading them back in the coop she wasn't having any of it. The funny thing was that when she started making noise as I was chasing her, the rooster inside the coop would start freaking out. After all he's supposed to be the one to protect his women from danger and he couldn't.

That's all of my garden adventures for now. Until next time.
