Comfrey Salve

I planted some Comfrey last year and this year boy did it come back with a vengeance. That's a very good thing because it means I have plenty of Comfrey for salve and poultices. I've never made a salve before and have been wanting to for a while so today I just went ahead and did it.

This is what Comfrey looks like. It has the big long pointy leaves that kind of fold in half and there are purple flowers although on this plant they have already come and gone. I am just waiting for them to dry out and give me some good seed

I didn't think to take any pictures early on of how I chopped up the comfrey but I simply put the leaves in this chopper which has an immersion or stick blender that connects to the top of it. I don't use this chopper for anything else, especially not food prep. From everything I have been able to find out, comfrey leaves are poisonous if ingested and I really don't want to chance that.

It would seem I am skipping a step yet again but it's just me forgetting to take another picture. What I did was put one cup of the chopped up comfrey into the slow cooker along with two cups of olive oil then I put it on low heat for about roughly five hours to let it immerse. This in the jar is the result, notice how dark green it is?

This is how I did it, strainer, funnel and jar.

Then I put it back into the crock pot and added about 2 ounces of beeswax.

Then I poured it into containers. I actually tested it first by putting a little in one of the containers and then sticking it in the freezer to see if it would harden up a little. It worked. First time ever and it worked, I don't usually get that lucky.

Unfortunately my camera battery ran out of juice before I could get a picture of the salve after it set but I also did another thing that I have been wanting to do, make peppermint tea from my stash.

It's a little hard to see in this picture but that roundish thing off to the left is a tea ball. I used that to make the tea and it worked. Very potent peppermint tea but good.

Until next time.
